How to Build a Girl: Na-na-na-na-boo-boo

I'm resting my elbow on a gorgeous advance copy of Caitlin Moran's novel, and I get to read it with a kick-ass group of bloggers and discuss it here every Monday, in more detail than is perhaps fair to those of you who have to wait until it comes out on September 23.

You can direct your sullen looks and preorder dollars toward Odyssey Bookshop HERE and its lovely proprietress (and brave leader of this Moran-along), Emily Crowe, HERE. This is all her fault. I never should have been given this much power.

So Caitlin Moran, huh? I don't know if you can spend any time in the good sections of the Internet without stumbling across this lady's work or some reference to it. I have to confess that I've not read her nonfiction book, How to Be a Woman, or her book of essays, Moranthology, but I follow her on Twitter. So.

I'm not as familiar with her writing voice as others of you may be, but when I think of Ms. Moran, I think of girl power and irreverent British humor and hair given permission to be wild as it cares to be, within reason. I predict that this general feminist spirit will be a big part of How to Build a Girl, confirmed so far by the jacket summary: "Imagine The Bell Jar—written by Rizzo from Grease."

Expect a lot of this, friends.

  2. I've just followed her on Twitter a few weeks ago, and I have to say that I am impressed. She has some serious wit going on.

I am also not familiar with Moran's other books (besides Laura and Co. vehemently pushing it on everyone... I will give in very soon, I promise) so I am looking forward to not having any ideas of where this whole shebang is going.

    YAYYYYY!

  5. I feel like if you follow her on twitter, you have a pretty good idea of her writing voice. You're covered, I'll allow this.

  6. I was feeling pretty chuffed about having a copy and getting to read with you all but then you went and posted a picture of you and Tika reading together and now I have the sads. Why aren't we all meeting in the real world to sit and read it together? That should be made a number 1 priority asap. We should also maybe look into lottery tickets.

  7. It's out already here - and it's such a NICE LOOKING LITTLE HARDBACK. I appreciate these things to such an extent that it was just another reason to buy it immediately. So I did. I've got my hairspray ready and my tights on under denim shorts, I'm good to go.

P.S. I read an interview in a magazine the other week where she talked about how the book is based off what she did as a teenager, 'building herself' out of her role models by pretending to be them in difficult situations, when she needed a boost. Bowie's confidence, Courtney Love's kick-ass-ness, Elizabeth Taylor's regal serenity... It was SUCH a good interview, I couldn't not buy the book really could I? Hardback-stroking fetish aside. CARRY ON.
