Hump Day Nerdgasm: Prepare to be underwhelmed

I accidentally took a hiatus from this self-imposed weekly feature that never talks about anything in particular. The whole of August was BEREFT of nerdgasming . . . but full of Wilkie Collins fangirling, thanks to Alice's Moonstone readalong. So it pretty well balanced out, I figure.

The newest news in Me Land is that I now get paid to spend time at my favorite bookstore, The Last Bookstore. Hey, remember when I talked about it that one time and that other time. . . and all those times on Twitter and Facebook? WELL I WORK THERE NOW.

Ironically, my new bookstore job has left me with less time to read, but IN THEORY I'm reading The Life of Pi, If He Hollers Let Him Go, and Frankenstein (yes, STILL . . . it just won't END).

I'm only a few pages in on . . . well, all of my current books, so I should probably pick one of them up instead of filling every spare moment with old episodes of Dr. Who. But I just got my Netflix Instant account back, and I couldn't help but go on a bit of a Who-bender. I finished Series 1 (pretty much in one day), and I'm kind of feeling the same way Rose is feeling. *eyes David Tennant suspiciously*

Never mind. I think I'll manage.

  1. Yay for bookstore jobs. They're the best. I know of what I speak. Are you a frontline bookseller, as they are known? That makes it sound like the toughest job you'll ever love. I want to know more, O fellow bookstore worker.

  2. Everyone looks at Tennant suspiciously at first. But then...oh, you wait. YOU WAIT, MADAM.

Also, I'm so excited about you watching Who. Also for your job, but of course this will leave you with less free time to text me back when I randomly do so. SO ALICE LOSES OUT HERE. Which is the important thing obviously.

  3. A bookstore job, especially in that bookstore, would be sooooo good. How are the customers in that store? Not punchworthy, I hope. Do you have to deal with them, in what you're doing there?

  4. Tennant is, according to my wife, the One True Doctor. Since I've been watching since the old series, they're all the Doctor. They're all awesome. Okay, okay... except Sylvester McCoy. I wasn't a fan of that guy. The new guy is really great!

  5. OK, so I watched the second episode in Series 2 this morning...and Eccleston who? Ohhh, just kidding, I'll always have a little Eccleston-shaped cubby in my heart, with extra room for his ears.

I will see your texts as SOON as I get off work and will text you back when it's way too late at night to be doing so. NEW TRADITION.

  6. I *know* you know, and I'll be soliciting your advice early and often, I think.

I am what they call a cashier/floater? So I think that's frontline...it SEEMS frontline. The store is HUGE and mostly used books and there's no computer inventory, so it's a daily adventure finding the books people are looking for and staying on top of what goes where. I'm looking forward to being the foremost expert in the nuances of 36 shelf sections. Or I'll die trying. One or the other.

  7. Not punchworthy in the slightest...although I've just had one full shift, so who knows what's awaiting me. The hardest part might be finding that PARTICULAR book someone is looking for without the help of a computer inventory. It's like a timed treasure hunt.

  8. I'm starting to see your wife's side of the matter, and Tennant WAS The Doctor for quite a long run. But I'm definitely looking forward to the episodes with Matt Smith. His face is kind of nice.

  9. I still want to basically move into that bookstore, so OMG you work there that is awesome! (I mean not for me, specifically. But still, it's awesome!)

And when Ecclestone left I was totally like I WILL ACCEPT NO ONE ELSE, but ahhhhh Tennant I LOVE YOUR FACE!

  10. I hope you do that dance each time you walk into the bookstore. Even if you don't, please don't tell me, as that's what I'm going to picture you doing.

    Also CONGRATS and YAY!

  11. Congrats! One day I will get to this bookstore, and I will look for you there!

Nine <3! Basically That gif of Eccleston is how I got introduced to who. A UK friend had it in her signature and it's all her fault! There's that shirt that says "You Never Forget Your First Doctor" and Nine is mine.

  12. I KNOW...and they give each employee a cubby in the back to put books in, so we can squirrel away anything that catches our eye while we're working and then buy them later. And the DISCOUNT. My book collection is about to get very much larger. I can feel it.

I'm already kind of loving the face right off of Tennant, and I'm only two episodes in to his series. I think I'm addicted.

  13. Oh...I do the dance, alright. I just don't look as cute doing it as he does. But who WOULD?

  14. YES! Come see me and ALL THE BOOKS.

I've never seen that shirt, but those words seem very true. I'll forever be a loyal follower of Nine, I think...even if he wanted to quit the series and wishes he had never done it. I love him, but I don't have to like him all the time.

  15. The Shirt is at Think Geek. I'd never heard why he did on series, but I'm glad he did. Who knows how well it would have done with a different actor. My opinion is whoever the current Doctor is, that's my favorite Doctor

  16. You work at The Last Bookstore?!?!! LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY! Gah, I love that place. Congrats!

  17. YES! Can you believe how lucky I am? I just bought a couple of books with my employee discount, and it was basically euphoric. I see some additional bookshelves in my future.
